Step Up for Students Tutoring - Florida Scholarships
If you're a Florida parent looking for personalized tutoring, Step Up for Students can help cover the cost. Florida's Step Up for Students program awards scholarships that families can use for private school tuition, tutoring, curriculum, therapies, and other approved educational expenses, giving your child more flexibility and support along their learning journey.
Firefly Tutors is an approved Choice Navigator or Direct-Pay-Provider through Step Up for Students, and we partner with Florida families every day to turn scholarship funds into personalized, one-on-one tutoring that builds confidence and a strong academic foundation. This means that parents pay nothing out of pocket to Firefly Tutors. Step Up For Students pays Firefly directly for tutoring services using your student’s approved scholarship fund.

What Is Step Up for Students?
Step Up for Students is a state-approved scholarship funding organization that administers Florida's K-12 education choice programs. Through Step Up for Students, eligible students receive funds in an Education Savings Account (ESA) that families can direct toward approved educational expenses, including tutoring with providers like Firefly Tutors.
All four scholarship programs are open to Florida residents eligible to enroll in K-12 public school, regardless of household income. Funding is awarded on a priority basis, with families at lower income levels funded first.
Scholarship Options Through SUFS
Eligibility: This program is open to all K-12 public school-eligible students in Florida, with a priority for those based on income levels.
Scholarship Amount: The average award is $7,800, primarily used for enrollment costs, and covers full-time and part-time tutoring.
Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA)
Eligibility: Open to all K-12 public school-eligible students in Florida, prioritizing those based on income levels.
Scholarship Amount: The average award is $7,800 for enrollment costs full and part-time tutoring.
Eligibility: Students not enrolled in private or public schools, offering access to an Educational Savings Account (ESA) to cover eligible educational expenses.
Eligible Expenses: Covers full and part-time tutoring, and other educational costs.
How Step Up for Students Tutoring Works
Once your child is awarded a scholarship, funds are deposited into an Education Savings Account managed through EMA (Education Market Assistant). Families select approved providers and pay for services directly through the account.
Firefly Tutors is a Step Up for Students-approved provider, which means families can use scholarship funds toward our one-on-one tutoring services. As a direct pay provider, we handle billing through EMA, so you don't pay out of pocket.

Important Dates and Deadlines
Applications for the 2026-27 school year opened in January 2026. As of April:

Using Step Up for Students for Tutoring with Firefly
Firefly Tutors works with Florida families to turn Step Up for Students scholarships into meaningful academic support. Every session is one-on-one, matched to your child's learning style, and focused on building confidence and a strong academic foundation.
We offer in-home tutoring, online tutoring, pod tutoring, and homeschool tutoring across all subjects - from phonics and reading to advanced math, writing, science, and test prep. We also support students with IEP-aligned instruction and reading challenges.
Our qualified tutors are vetted, background-checked, and trained to meet each student where they are. One-on-one tutoring nearly doubles learning gains compared to group instruction, making personalized support one of the most impactful ways to use Step Up for Students funds.

Eligibility and Priority Funding
All four Step Up for Students scholarships are open to Florida students regardless of household income, but funding is limited and awarded in priority order:
- First priority: students whose household income does not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty level, or who are in foster care or out-of-home care
- Second priority: students whose household income falls between 185 percent and 400 percent of the federal poverty level
- Other applicants: students above 400 percent of the federal poverty level are still eligible and funded as resources allow
Active-duty military families with permanent change-of-station orders to Florida are also eligible to apply before relocating.
