Fun Educational Games to Play in a Pool

It's summertime, which means it's time to take your educational games to the pool! After all, what could be more fun than learning while cooling off on a hot summer day? Although tutoring may traditionally take place in a classroom or library, there is no reason why it can't be fun too! Here are a few of our favorite pool-friendly educational games.

For starters, try a game of Marco Polo. This classic game not only teaches listening skills, but also develops spatial awareness. Another option is to create an obstacle course in the pool using floaties and noodles. This is great for problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

If you're looking for something a little more active, try a game of water basketball or chicken fights. These games help to develop teamwork and communication skills, while also getting everyone moving. So next time you're looking for something to do at the pool, try one of these fun educational games.

Word Ladder: This classic word game is perfect for summer because it can be played anywhere, including the pool! To play, simply choose a starting and ending word, then create a chain of words that connect the two. For example, you could start with the word "swim" and end with the word "math." The catch is that each new word in the ladder must be one letter different from the previous word. So in our example, you might have a ladder that looks like this: swim, slow, snow, know, show, shrimp, schema.

Grammar Scavenger Hunt: This game is perfect for budding grammarians. To play, simply make a list of grammatical terms (e.g., adjectives, adverbs, etc.) and then challenge players to find examples of each term in their surroundings. For example, players might search for an adjective in a poolside sign or an adverb in someone's swimming technique.

What could be more summer than a pool party? How about a pool party with educational games? That's right, summertime fun doesn't have to mean that learning takes a break. In fact, there are all sorts of fun and educational games that can be played in the pool. One simple but effective game is to write out letters or numbers on floats or pool noodles and then have kids identify them as they swim around. For a more active game, try setting up an obstacle course using pool toys and floats. Kids can navigate their way through the course while learning about spatial relations and problem solving.

Quiz time! Get a group of friends or family together and have someone ask general knowledge questions. Whoever gets the most right can be the winner!

Turn tutoring into a treasure hunt! Hide math problems or pieces of spelling around the pool area and see who can find them all the fastest. As an extra challenge, you could time each player to see who is the quickest problem-solver! Remember, NO running around the pool!

Pool algebra! Challenge someone to solve an equation by using pool toys as variables. For example, two ducks plus one ball equals three (2+1=3). This game is great for practicing mental arithmetic and problem-solving skills.

Pool Noodle Math. Slice a noodle into 10-20 round pieces that float. With a waterproof marker draw numbers 1-20 on the floaters. Create math problems to solve at your child's level.

Keep your brain ticking over with a game of logic puzzles! Try to work out how to get from one end of the pool to the other without touching the floor, or swim through a sequence of numbers in order without going backwards. These kinds of puzzles are great for sharpening your mind and keeping you thinking on your feet.

So next time you're planning a summer get-together, don't forget the educational games! The kids will love them and they might even learn something along the way.
